Grants help refurbish clubhouse

EDF Energy, owners of West Burton Power Station, has awarded a grant of £10,000 to our club to help refurbish the clubhouse to make it more welcoming to both members and visitors and make additional alterations to improve access for disabled people. Work has already begun and will continue through the summer. Andy Richardson from EDF made the presentation to our chairman Richard Howard during junior coaching and said "it was a pleasure to see and understand the great work you are involved in. The local communities, especially children, are very fortunate to have such a well-managed, cared for facility and support network"

Zingy, the EDF mascot also came along to both pose with everyone and spend a bit of time umpiring part of the session. Photos of the presentation should be on the website in the next few weeks.

All this is on top of the two other fabulous grants totalling £39,522 from the Nottinghamshire County Council and Bassetlaw District Council Legacy funds for the resurfacing of the courts and the renewing of the perimeter fencing.

Team News – 2013 Season

Wheatley Tennis Club 1st Team have gained promotion back to the Gainsborough Evening League Division One following their win against their nearest rivals North Scarle. It is a great achievement to be back so soon after the disappointment of relegation last season and all members of the squad can be proud of their contributions to the season but a special mention must go to both Martin Eldred and Graeme Naish who only lost one set all summer.

The Wheatley 2nd Team have also had an extremely enjoyable and competitive season but, like all other teams in Division Three, were swept aside by new entrants to the league Wheatley Hills from Doncaster.

Club News – Courts Update

The courts at Wheatley were resurfaced in September 2013 thanks to a £25000 grant from the Nottinghamshire Count Council Legacy fund. We anticipate that the courts will be painted in early April and the new all-weather playing surface means that members will be able to look forward to a fantastic 2014.

We have also received confirmation of a further grant of just over £14000 from Bassetlaw District Council which will enable the perimeter fencing to be replaced before the start of the season.

The good news doesn’t end here either with the club also receiving a Sportivate grant that will enable the club to offer some coaching lessons at substantially discounted rates early in the New Year.

End of Season Tournament

To celebrate, the club held an earlier than usual ‘End of Season’ tournament, which was kindly sponsored by Open Doors Auctions. The afternoon was a huge success and following eight very competitive rounds, Veryan Gull and Graeme Naish were declared the winners.
